Donut Making Time: #authorlife commentary part ONE

This is the first installment in a new series, I've affectionately titled, "Donut Making Time."

YES, I know Donut is really spelled Doughnut.

What's more important is this will be a series of posts dedicated to the craft of writing. The business side along with the creative side. It will feature my opinions and experience with a decent helping of positivity and sarcasm, so take it or leave it.

Don’t turn a hobby into a jobby.

It’s one of my favorite quotes/sayings, and I have to be one hundred percent transparent: I forget where I heard it. If this saying belongs to you, raise your hand high so I can give credit where credit is due!

Over the last decade, I’ve built a number of entrepreneurial ventures from a self-sufficient, reputable, moneymaking blog to licensing a product and being awarded a U.S. Patent to publishing seven independent titles.

“You’re a creative,” I hear often. I don’t consider myself to be one, but I guess I am. That being said, I consider myself a businesswoman.

Business strategy is the common thread with everything I’ve done.

Yes, I love to write. Lifestyle columns, fiction, and opinionated prose: I love it all.

I spent years prototyping and “crafting” as I liked to call it when creating my product.

And blogging is an art in and of itself. It’s crafting a message in a way that’s authentic, personal, and PROFESSIONAL.

Except, none of the above would have happened without strategy and forethought.

Maybe I make it look easy (I don’t know, people say that, but to me…it’s all hard work). This is not a new thing, but lots and lots of people want to be bloggers and writers and both. They want free items (doesn’t happen so easily) and they want to top the chart over at the BIG ‘Zon (even less likely).

BUT here’s the thing…it’s very rare when this happens without deep marketing (elbow grease + budget) and exceptional planning.

Who is going to find your blog? How will they find it? Why should they read it?

The same can be said of your book. Not to mention, is your blurb intriguing? How do you plan to reach new readers? How about your cover? Is it inviting? Appealing?

You want free stuff? What are your blog’s numbers? Unique Visitors? Commenters? Engaged readers? Do you know?

Oh, you want a publishing deal? ^^ See above. Same stuff.

Point being, there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes to turn a passion into a bona-fide business. I strongly feel you should love what you’re doing. But in order to do what you love, you may have to do a lot of shit you don’t love.

This post brought to you by being called “inspirational” on Twitter this morning. HA!

Well, I would say painfully truthful, yet inspirational (and sarcastic).

“Modern, realistic, touching and delicious, I binged on the feels from the first page to the last!” — Katy Evans, NYT Bestselling Author

To #bookbloggers with love,

Releasing a book is more than pressing a button.

It's way more than even writing the book.

It's like taking your beautiful, newborn, fragile, and delicate baby, bundling them up, and handing her off to daycare. Except YOU, bloggers and reviewer, are daycare workers. Readers are other visitors/parents/relatives/friends. And well, the book is the baby. ~ R

...It's so hard not to drive bloggers insane with instructions (quite similar to when you leave your kid for the first time). Seriously. Use this teaser, please share my book at this time but not at that time, email me if you get any questions, call me if there are any emergencies, and please, please, please take care of my baby with kid-gloves. These hardworking and often underpaid bloggers do their best to promote our babies. I imagine they want to kick us (or just me) in the shins often if not all of the time.

Anyway, with pressing the button looming, I wanted to say THANK YOU in advance to all of the marvelous bloggers and reviewers out there. Like Eileen, the first person to watch my son, you are the first to receive To See You, and please don't think it goes unnoticed how well you take care of her.

Special, special thanks to Angie and Jessica's Dreamy ReadsTotally Booked, and Maryse for their GORGEOUS early previews of To See You. If you have a chance, head on over and stalk them. They deserve it.

And to EVERYONE, all my readers, bloggers, and reviewers—new and old—I can't say I love you enough.

DID you see the GORGEOUS Cover Reveal for To See You?

Thank you TRSOR Promotions for helping me share this precious baby. I cannot wait to share this story with you!!

Read more about where the heck this story came from here -

To See You is a new emotional standalone coming June 2016!

No cliffhanger, only hard-earned unexpected love. And angst.

About The Book:

What is it about this guy?

On paper, he’s one hundred percent wrong for me. His e-mails are equal parts annoying and funny.

Okay, more funny than annoying. More like refreshing. Different. Exciting.

But as I stand next to him now, he’s giving me head-to-toe tingles, and I find myself dwelling on his e-mails.

Meet smart, sexy career girl and New York snob, Charli Richards. She has everything except happiness until the day she meets Layton Griffin. It’s a random encounter on an airplane; it couldn’t mean anything, right?

Layton isn’t even remotely close to who Charli sees herself hooking up with . . . ever. Her mom and best friend agree he’s not for her, but he makes her feel something exciting, awakens her world.

But then Layton changes, going to great lengths for Charli to see him for who he really is.

Will those changes bring them closer together, or will she never be able to see him in the same way again?

♥ What's really behind my upcoming release? To See You... ♥

Have you ever fallen for someone who was so completely opposite of your ideal? Or your idea of the ideal? There has to be that one time when some guy got you thinking...

Right?

I'm so excited for my upcoming release, To See You, for this reason. It is about unexpected love. The kind of attraction that blooms when it is least expected.

Layton came to me on a trip to Disney. I was seated across from a dude. He wasn't my type nor the other girl seated next to him (I could tell). YET, she liked him. He was funny and confident in a fresh way——

Anyway, this story blossomed in my mind and IT is coming soon!

In fact, it is available for EXCLUSIVE preorder on iBooks

Hey Dudes: Mother's Day is Coming!

Mother's Day is fast approaching and over on my other blog, I often detail what that day means to me and/or what every mom needs or wants. Anyway, this morning at 5 a.m. (yes, I am up that early), I decided to pick out a few must-haves for moms who love to read.

Soooo, pass this little post onto your man and let him do the clicking.

I discovered this pillow on Etsy...and it's customizable. I think mine should read: Drink Coffee, Read, Read Some More.

I've been wanting these wine bottles for-freaking-ever, BUT they do not ship alcohol to Pennsylvania. For some of you who live in more lenient states, these are a MUST!

OKAY, this Mug DOESN'T really have to do with reading but I want it to use while reading.

Last but not least, did you know I offer signed paperbacks?

I DO! Which always makes a GREAT gift! Just sayin'

Happy Mother's day!

Rachel

If you don't have anything nice to say...you know the saying.

This blog has sat dormant for a while, and there's no good explanation other than I don't have any words. SHOCKING! An author with no words.

I just don't.

And I shouldn't be using the word just.

I simply don't.

I've been saving all my words for my books, but every night as I go to sleep, I wish I had some extra words. I'd write about how hard self-publishing is and the many behind-the-scenes facets. I'd vomit up how important reviews are, and yet many are disappearing from Amazon. Daily. I would speak to the agonizing decision of participating in KU vs. NOT. Mostly, I'd complain about the loneliness that often accompanies writing.

It's a good thing I don't have any words left because they would come out all negative and twisted when I should simply be grateful.

And I am.

For you.

Readers. Who make my world a little less lonely and A LOT brighter!

XOXO,

R

Coming Soon with all my words.

Coming Soon with all my words.

Love and Thanks and a Giveaway!

Thank you to ALL of my readers for making the release of Dolce a huge success. I couldn't do what I do without all of you, so <3 <3 <3! All my love, donuts, hugs and kisses.

If you posted a review of Dolce on Amazon and/or Goodreads, check out the Giveaway Below!!

Look at this extra special copy of Absolution Road, signed with love by over 40 authors all in attendance at Holidays with the Belles! I'm giving it + a $25 Gift Card to Starbucks to one lucky reader who follows me on Twitter, joins my private Facebook group The Electric Readers, and leaves a review of one of Dolce!

It's a regular party up in here. New Releases, Sales, Covers...

It has been an absolute whirlwind since I last posted.

In fact, I felt like I had nothing to say in the beginning of the year. SHOCKING, I know! Anyway, now I have a ton.

First, I went to a signing this past weekend, and let me tell you....thank you Dallas for making me feel welcome. I loved meeting everyone who stopped by my table AND yes, I will continue to bring my signature lip glosses to every event. They are the biggest hit, and I'll tell you why....nothing like picking your own color. By the way, they're organic and all-natural glosses... in case you were worried.

I digress.

Second, the cover is out in the WILD for Dolce.

I know, so, so pretty!

I LOVE it only second to the actual story.

And that's about it for me. Oh, I have a few basketball games this week and a winter concert for my son's orchestra.

XOXO

R

Which brings me to my third point. Dolce is up for preorder (99 cents/special price!) and Vérité is on sale for 99 cents so it's a regular bargain basement this month. But I know after the holidays, it is rough getting back on budget so I felt in my heart this was the right thing to do with pricing.

Finally, I have a handy dandy signed paperback store right now. ^^ Right up there under PURCHASE.

DOLCE Cover Reveal ALMOST Here!

I know, I know...it's agony waiting to see the cover of an upcoming book.

Believe me, I have the patience of a two year old, and there is nothing more that I would like to do than show you the teaser. BUT the gals over at Southern Belles would shoot me (okay, not really...but they are going to do a beautiful job of revealing the cover).

ANYWAY, get ready because DOLCE is coming.

ADD it to your TBR here.

And because you are the best... a quick teaser.

XOXO,

Rachel

A New Site & Teaser AND A New Year!

Happy Holidays and here is to an amazing New Year!

What is at the top of your wish list this year?

You're looking at what was at the top of mine! A new WEBSITE!

Special thanks to Sarina Bowen from Author Clicks, who made it for me! It's so beautiful, and shortly after the New Year, you will be able to purchase paperbacks right from here! Yippee.

Happy Everything From Me to You!

Happy Everything From Me to You!

I would love to hear what your holiday plans include??

I hope to spend some time with my kids and enjoy in a little bit of quiet reading and cookie eating.

After the New Year, Dolce will be HERE!

Stay tuned for the cover, but in the meantime...how about a little teaser?

She didn’t say anything, just stared at me like she was trying to understand the opposing team’s plays. My cock was hard as shit, and my heart raced like I was at center court. I both loved and hated it. My whole life was ahead of me, and yeah, I wanted more. But was this it? This tiny outspoken woman from New Jersey who seemed to be so sure, yet unsure of herself?
